Technology moves us. It makes our lives easier, convenient, and efficient. We harness its power to improve almost every aspect of our lives from communication and medicine to infrastructure and transportation. Innovation drives technology, and for the past decade, we have witnessed a constant and fast influx of innovation impacting the way we live, communicate, consume entertainment, cure diseases, and especially the way we travel.

One of the most anticipated and eminent innovations today is the arrival of 5G technology. It has been making headlines since its deployment in 2019. In fact, South Korea became the first country to adopt the technology on a large scale. Giant Swedish telecom Ericsson even predicted that 65 percent of the world’s population will be using 5G technology by the end of 2025.

What Is 5G Technology?

Simply put, 5G is a fifth-generation (hence its name) network. It is expected to enhance mobile technology not only to improve communication and media consumption but to also elevate the efficiency of the Internet of things or IoT. 5G aims to produce a higher level of performance that will improve user experience exponentially. Not only is 5G limited to the mobile industry, but it will also augment the efficacy of various industries including transportation.

The transportation industry will benefit greatly from the integration of 5G technology within its existing network infrastructures. This next-generation wireless network will enable higher visibility, increased coverage, and better command over systems of transportation. In fact, due to 5G’s low latency, high capacity, and accuracy, the movement of goods and people will improve over time.

End-To-End Connectivity

With the use of 5G technology, end-to-end connectivity will also be made possible throughout different cities and regions. Apart from this, 5G also bolsters communication fundamentals for transportation. These include vehicle-to-vehicle communication or the transmission of signals from one vehicle to another and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication that pertains to the communication between vehicles and road/bridge sensors, electronic toll gates, traffic lights, and speed detectors. In addition, 5G technology will also improve software updates, remote diagnostics, the gathering of passenger data, and the application of new services.

Safety And Security

5G technology will pave the way for better, more effective, intelligent and smart transportation. Using 5G, smart vehicles will further enhance their safety capabilities with weather alerts, crash sensors, and remote driving. Harnessing this technology will help mitigate safety concerns. Ultimately, 5G is positioned to make driving safer for everyone.

Sustainability

Today, 4G LTE networks are the most commonly used. They can deliver data up to 1GB per second. However, in comparison, 5G networks are 20 times faster. In application, this will mean they can deliver up to 20GB of data per second. Such high speed could bring about new types of services, such as automated monitoring of utility consumption, security, conducting remote medical operations, and vehicle-to-vehicle communication. These conveniences will allow for sustainable approaches to transportation. Since communication is faster, route planning and fleet management will become more efficient and time-saving, with reduced fuel consumption and carbon footprint.

Conclusion

There is so much to anticipate about 5G technology and its impact on the transportation industry. It can improve end-to-end connectivity, safety, security, as well as sustainability. Needless to say, the opportunities are countless. Event transportation consultants can leverage on the advantages of 5G networks. This will ultimately enhance customer experience and drive high profits for event and transportation management businesses.
